# Creating Derivative Works

One of Knovel's core features is the ability for readers to create derivative works — fanfiction, translations, adaptations — directly on the platform, with licensing terms set by the original author.

## What Is a Derivative Work?

A derivative work is any new creative work that builds on an existing published book on Knovel. This includes:

* **Fanfiction** — new stories featuring the same characters or world
* **Translations** — the original work rendered in another language
* **Adaptations** — retellings, reimaginings, or works inspired by the original

Not all books allow derivative works. Authors configure this when they publish. If a book allows derivatives, you'll see the option on the book page.

## Starting a Derivative Work

1. Open the book page of the work you want to build on
2. Check the **License** section on the book page to confirm derivative works are permitted and what type of license applies
3. Click **Create Derivative Work**
4. Select the type of derivative work you're creating (fanfiction, translation, adaptation)
5. You'll be taken to the editor where you can begin writing

Your derivative work will be linked to the original on-chain. The original author's license terms apply automatically.

## License Types That Apply to Derivatives

**Non-Commercial Social Remixing** You can create and publish derivative works freely. You cannot charge for them or earn money from them. Credit to the original work is required.

**Commercial Remix (Royalty Share)** You can create and publish derivative works, including monetized ones. A royalty share — set by the original author — flows to them automatically from any earnings your derivative work generates.

If neither license type is shown on the book page, the author has not enabled derivative works and you cannot create one from that title.

## After You Publish

Your derivative work is published as its own work on Knovel, linked to the original. Readers can discover it through the original book's page, through your author profile, and through the Explore feed.
