# Connecting Your Wallet

Knovel uses a crypto wallet to manage your identity and IP on-chain. Your wallet is how you sign transactions when you publish, mint derivative works, or update your rights settings.

You don't need to hold any cryptocurrency to use Knovel. The wallet is used for signing, not for payments (at this stage).

## Supported Wallets

Knovel connects via **Thirdweb**, which supports the following:

* **MetaMask** — the most widely used browser extension wallet
* **Coinbase Wallet** — available as a browser extension and mobile app
* **WalletConnect** — connects to most mobile wallets via QR code

If you don't have a wallet yet, we recommend starting with MetaMask. Download it at [metamask.io](https://metamask.io) — it's a free browser extension available for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge.

## How to Connect

1. Navigate to [knovel.co](https://knovel.co) and click **Connect Wallet** in the top right corner.
2. A modal will appear showing the supported wallet options. Select your wallet.
3. Your wallet will open and ask you to approve the connection. Click **Connect** or **Approve**.
4. Once connected, your wallet address will appear in the top right. You're in.

That's it. Knovel does not ask for your seed phrase or private key at any point. If anything ever asks you for those, do not enter them.

## Switching Wallets

To disconnect your current wallet or switch to a different one, click your wallet address in the top right and select **Disconnect**. You can then reconnect with a different wallet.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Do I need ETH or any crypto to use Knovel?** Not right now. Knovel is currently operating on the Aeneid testnet, which means transactions are free. When Knovel moves to mainnet, there will be small gas fees for publishing and on-chain actions. We'll communicate this clearly before it happens.

**What network is Knovel on?** Knovel currently runs on the Story Protocol Aeneid testnet. Mainnet migration is planned — see the [Roadmap](/knovel/roadmap/roadmap.md) for details.

**Is my wallet information stored by Knovel?** Knovel reads your public wallet address to identify you on the platform. Your private keys never leave your wallet.
