# Mission & Vision

## Mission

Knovel exists to give independent authors the tools to build a sustainable readership, publish their work on their own terms, and own what they create.

## Vision

Publishing has always been a relationship business. The authors who build lasting careers aren't necessarily the ones with the best distribution deals — they're the ones who build real connections with their readers.

We're building the platform that makes that possible at scale: one where every tool an author needs — writing, publishing, community, monetization, rights management — lives in one place, and where the relationship between author and reader is the foundation, not an afterthought.

We believe independent authors should own their IP, control how it's used and remixed, and be able to earn directly from the readership they build — without giving up rights or revenue to intermediaries who don't add value.

## Core Principles

**Ownership over access.** Your work belongs to you. Knovel uses on-chain IP registration so your rights are recorded in a way that no platform change, acquisition, or policy update can revoke.

**Relationships over algorithms.** We build for authors and readers who want to find each other, not for engagement metrics that benefit advertisers. Discovery on Knovel is driven by genuine reader engagement — finishes, reviews, follows — not ad spend.

**Community as infrastructure.** Derivative works — fanfiction, translations, adaptations — aren't a threat to authors. They're a signal that readers care deeply enough to participate. Knovel treats community creation as a feature, not a liability.

**Openness over lock-in.** We build on open protocols. Your IP registration lives on-chain, not in a proprietary database. Your rights travel with you.
